Global Perspective: World Alzheimer’s Month edition

World-Alzheimers-Month

Dear friends and colleagues,

Following what was an incredibly busy September, packed with online and in-person activities from our members across the world, we are beyond delighted to share this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month has been our most successful to date.

Despite still being in the stronghold of a global pandemic, the 2021 campaign saw a record number of participants across the world, with over 111 countries (60% of the world!) participating in activities.

We reached upwards of 50 million people, an increase of 150% from 2020, literally smashing our previous record! This amazing success belongs to all of us!

Virtually, we saw an extraordinary amount of participation and engagement from the general public, with individuals, businesses, foundations and public figures all partaking in the conversations around this year’s theme of ‘Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s’.

As you are likely to already know, this year’s theme shone a light on the importance of a timely diagnosis, as well as continuing to break down the stigma that still surrounds dementia. Our 10 warnings of dementia infographic was widely translated, as were our campaign hashtags #KnowDementia and #KnowAlzheimers, leading to a record number of people and public bodies engaging with the campaign’s message.

None of this would have been possible without the strong willpower and determination of our members, all of whom have worked tirelessly to raise awareness. We cannot thank you enough, from the bottom of our heart, for showing the world once again what a united and determined family and movement we are! I wish you the best of luck for your work in the coming months and will look forward to working with you to make the life of people living with dementia and their families better worldwide.
